Hospital Schools

Warning, first off. This is going to be long. Okay, here we go.

One of the stories in my world focuses on the life of Feizh, a guy who develops psychological delusions and such, partly from a couple physically inherent conditions he has but notably triggered by a traumatic experience he had. He's a difficult character to get my head around sometimes because of his distorted perceptions of the world around him, but I've developed a few interesting social systems that had direct influence on how he grew up.

First is the form of religion practiced in the greater areaCollapse )

Next is tarot and the system of DedicationCollapse )

In short, Feizh was born under a perfect sequence for the god Deimet, but instead of taking the child the priest told his parents to take him and leave town before his superior found out that he let them go. Feizh's parents split up a few years down the line when his physical conditions become confusing and demanding things to deal with. Which brings us to the title of this post...

Hospitals taking control of the care and education of childrenCollapse )

That was all very long, but if you can think of any points that could be elaborated on or developed deeper, I would appreciate the feedback.

Something that happened yesterday's been bugging me...

So yesterday morning to answer a daily question on my writing blog, the question, concerning gestures, was this:

"What gestures are insulting? What do they mean? Do some gestures differ in meaning depending on the culture or time (example: the American "V" for victory sign, which became the peace sign, is/was highly insulting in Europe)?"

So I thought for a moment and came up with this answer:

"Crossing ones fingers does not mean hoping for luck in Sekiya--it is a gesture wishing a curse on those that see it, (akin to the middle finger on Earth)"

Then when I checked for comments some hours later, I get one saying that my answer was "infantile"...so now I'm wondering if I just need to delete that answer and answer the question again, or leave it as it is.

What do you like to translate your conlang into? At the moment I've only translated short pieces of English literature such as Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Lord's Prayer. However I would like to do some further translations of other literature about the same size. Any ideas?

This is the only writing I've done in my world so far--the dragoon apprentice character is going to feed a dragon he has a friendship with, and happens to see two other dragoons check this dragon's eggs to see if they are fertile.

Perhaps I should introduce myself instead of just lurking? Well, I'm Shiro, casual conlanger and writer, and full time classics geek/mad scientist.

I'm slowly working on a novel at the moment, leftovers from NaNo before last. It's sort of steampunk, but with a double shot of magic.
snip, snip, length cutCollapse )
And that's a brief snapshot of my world-in-progress. This summer is definitely going to be a major time for developing and improving!

Hi, I've been developing this world in my head for a while, and am going to start writing about it....

I'm doing it language first for consistency, but am also learning to read/write tolklang in Quenya, as well as speak Quenya.

My Blog's going to be mostly about that for now, but When I have time, I'll add in theorisations on new words, hwo to pronounce etc.

So, watch my journal, be my first friend on LJ! thanks.

I'm not new to Livejournal, and not really to culture construction, but usually I construct languages. I've recently gotten into making cultures. The best way to explore something, I think is to make something fundamentally like it but as different as possible.

I'm not sure what I should say about myself. I guess that I have two cats, more conlangs than I can count and I'm sort of tossing some culture ideas around in my head at the moment.
